Brothers João Vicente and Valdecy Claudino found out very early that they had some talent for business. They were still boys when they helped "dad" Joca Claudino to serve customers in a modest store in Cajazeiras town, in Paraiba State , Brazil .

Years later, in 1958, in Bacabal City, Maranhão State, they opened the first store with the trade name "Armazém Paraíba" - Paraíba Store, an extension of the firm based in Cajazeiras. The name is after the State where the two enterprising brothers were born.

With this inititive, the Claudino brothers experienced the ever-lasting fate of the Brazilian "nordestinos" having to escape the drought which impoverished their homelands.

Economy

This hardship however, ended up being the major step for the expansion of the family's enterprises. The Claudino brothers learned, then a life-time lesson: every crisis is an opportunity.

Today "Armazém Paraíba" is one of the largest retail networks of Brazil . It generated other businesses connected to its activities and gave birth to several companies which now make "Grupo Claudino".
